Okay, I need someone to talk me down. I thought ebikes were just bicycles with a little battery. Grandma uses one. 20 mph max. Cute, right?
Wrong.
Last night I fell down a rabbit hole and discovered Surron. This thing has NO PEDALS. It looks like a dirt bike. And then the rider twisted the throttle and the front wheel lifted off the ground like it was trying to escape gravity. A WHEELIE. From a standstill. Silent and violent.
They do 50, 60, even 70 mph. That's more power than my first car. This is an electric dirt bike with an identity crisis.
And kids ride these on bike paths wearing a bike helmet like it's a cruiser. One wrong move and you're orbiting the moon.
How is this legal in the same category as a Pedego? No pedals? That's not an ebike. That's an e motorcycle. Full stop.
Now I can't stop watching wheelie compilations and looking up prices. Someone tell me I'm not crazy. Has anyone ridden one? Did you immediately crash into a bush?
Be honest. I'm terrified and somehow also want one.

You're not crazy. You're just bumping into the legal grey zone. The Surron is legally sold as a "motorcycle" or "off-highway vehicle" in most states, not an ebike, which is why it lacks pedals. The confusion comes from dealers and riders blurring the lines, but if you take one on a bike path, you're technically riding an unregistered, uninsured dirt bike. So your terror is justified, but your desire is too. Just treat it like what it is: a lightweight electric motorcycle.
