rental scooters - net positive or not really ? - WattIsLove - May 13, 2026

I have been watching rental e-scooters pop up everywhere in most major cities.  I want to ask what people really think of them. Do municipalities actually find that they reduce traffic, or is that just wishful thinking? On one hand, it seems like a good idea when you need to ride from the bus stop to your house. That last mile or two could be perfect for a scooter. But then you see people (mostly kids) carelessly blasting on sidewalks, weaving around pedestrians, and you have to wonder if the hassle is worth it.  They annoy seniors who least expect them.

Overall, do people actually like them? I am also thinking about the cost. Riding from the bus stop to your house might only be a dollar or three dollars per trip, but that can really add up on a daily commute. By the end of the week you could be spending $15 dollars or more just for that short ride. Is that worth it compared to walking or buying your own cheap scooter?

I am not looking for a fight, just honest opinions. Are rental e-scooters a real solution for short commutes or just a passing fad that costs too much and gets in everyone's way. Let me know what you think.
