NYC declares war on fast e-bikes, sends cease-and-desist letters to Amazon and Walmar - NinjaNY - August 9, 2026
Mayor Mamdani's office sent cease-and-desist letters to 40 online retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Temu, and Wayfair, demanding they stop selling electric bikes, scooters and similar vehicles that don't comply with NYC law. Retailers have until later this month to stop selling the prohibited vehicles to NYC residents or face fines of up to $2,000.
The issue: NYC caps e-bikes at 25 mph, stricter than most states' 28 mph Class 3 limit, and many online listings advertise several thousand watts of power and speeds exceeding 30 mph while still calling themselves "electric bikes," often without proper VINs or registration as mopeds/motorcycles. Amazon says it's reviewing the flagged products and willing to work with the city.
