Fat tires and ebikes - Hubert - August 18, 2025 Hello, I am a bit of a seasoned gentleman currently looking into getting into ebikes. I have been watching this market for a while and I noticed many new different styles that have merged over last several years. I am wondering what is the deal with fat tires (4 inch tire width). I see them on smaller 20 inch wheels but also on 26. What is the fuzz all about?? cheers! RE: Fat tires and ebikes - purplerain - August 19, 2025 It is just a different feeling with fat tires. It feels like a 2 wheel tank or monster truck. It acts as suspension, mostly meant for off-road environments. RE: Fat tires and ebikes - exo - August 22, 2025 Let’s be real - they look downright badass cruising past skinny-tire commuters. More traction, more stability, more style - what’s not to love? Much easier to handle them on an e-bike than regular bike :P RE: Fat tires and ebikes - retire65 - September 1, 2025 (August 18, 2025, 08:31 PM)Hubert Wrote: Hello, I am a bit of a seasoned gentleman currently looking into getting into ebikes. +1 here. They look less wobbly with better grip, but you pay for that with a heavier bike and definitely need to compensate for that. But this is an ebike - you got the motor, so that makes that easier! RE: Fat tires and ebikes - CityGuy - October 27, 2025 One of the critical performance advantages: you can run lower tire pressure on soft surfaces (snow, sand, loose gravel) giving better "float" or footprint, improved traction & comfort. For example: many fat tire bikes allow as low as 5 psi up to 30 psi depending on terrain. This creates "floating" effect that traditional tires and can’t match, making them ideal for off-road adventures or year-round commuting in tough conditions. The larger tires, however, add weight and rolling resistance. Wider tires typically add about 4 pounds to the bicycle’s weight. So that is why these tires gained steam for e-bikes. The extra drag and the extra weight you can make up with the motor power. And Yes, they do look cool. |
