E-scooters and helmets

I hate to admit it, but I am not a fan of wearing helmets.  I also don't ride in the city so I don't wear one on my bicycle either.   I do for motor-cross but that is a different world.  I want to get into e-scooters and I know that some of them can go really fast.  The difference is that I probably would end up riding my scooter in the city.  I think I can control my self so I would not be going at crazy speeds probably max 18mph or so.   I do see some guys particularly on unicycles wear full face helmets and body armor.   I also see some bigger scooters guys fully protected and I'm pretty sure they are flooring it.  When I see kids ripping through the suburbs I don't see them with helmets.  I probably would be going about that speed maybe teeny tiny faster.   I got a full face from my motor-cross, and I am willing to put it on for faster rides, but if I can control my self and ride at friendly cruising speed, I think I'd be fine risk wise.   The only question is - can I control my self?

Even at those speeds, hitting a pothole, a distracted driver opening a car door, or just a momentary lapse in balance can put you on the pavement hard. Head injuries can happen at surprisingly low speeds, and recovery from one can be life changing in a way no scuffed elbow or bruised knee ever will be.

City riding has its own unpredictable risks - cars, pedestrians, uneven roads - that make a helmet just as important. Once you get in the habit, it stops feeling like a hassle.

You might want to consider local regulations as well. Also I would not take kids as serious examples :)

Not everyone wants to feel like they’re gearing up for battle just to ride a scooter. I think it’s all about personal responsibility meaning knowing the risks making an informed choice and riding smart. If someone’s comfortable at moderate speeds and alert on the road, that’s their decision. Freedom’s part of what makes riding enjoyable.

I just wiped out recently.  Luckily it was a bruised knee and I did not hit my head but I could had.  Next time could be different.  I don't ride fast and I never wore a helmet before but I am now reconsidering.
