Been commuting to work on my scooter for months now. Turns out, no one cared. A senior director pulled me aside and whispered she had one too but was too embarrassed to bring it in. She asked for my lock recommendation. Another client just pointed at it and asked how fast it goes. We talked for five minutes before the meeting even started. I picked up real confidence when one of the more senior coworkers mentioned he commutes with a scooter too. He said it saves him an hour a day. If he can pull it off, I figured I had nothing to worry about. I stuck to the dress code. Crisp shirt, blazer, clean sneakers. Matte black helmet. No neon. No racing stripes. It says I have places to be, not that I just left a frat party.
I am not just the new kid anymore. I am the scooter guy. But it is not a punchline. It is a conversation starter. I have connected with partners and clients over the best routes to avoid potholes. It has humanized me in a way that a plain suit never could. One older client raised an eyebrow when he saw it through the window. I caught his eye, smiled, and said it beats sitting in traffic for forty five minutes. He laughed and agreed. That was it. The ice broke in two seconds. Are there people who think it is childish? Sure. Are there people who think it is dangerous? Definitely. But those same people are stressed from fighting traffic and paying thirty bucks a day for parking. I show up early, energized, and with zero road rage. That counts for something.
Overall, I was being too nervous about looking professional.
If you are young and ambitious and considering this move, just do it.
