One of the critical performance advantages: you can run lower tire pressure on soft surfaces (snow, sand, loose gravel) giving better "float" or footprint, improved traction & comfort. For example: many fat tire bikes allow as low as 5 psi up to 30 psi depending on terrain. This creates "floating" effect that traditional tires and can’t match, making them ideal for off-road adventures or year-round commuting in tough conditions. The larger tires, however, add weight and rolling resistance. Wider tires typically add about 4 pounds to the bicycle’s weight. So that is why these tires gained steam for e-bikes. The extra drag and the extra weight you can make up with the motor power. And Yes, they do look cool.
